Ohio-based lyricist Chilla K. was born in Columbus on July 2, 1993 and has been rapping since the 10th grade. Chilla started doing poetry at the age of 12. Garnering early recognition by his teachers, he was asked to perform at talent shows and other gatherings. In a turn of fate, he was able to gain musical connections through a summer job that was supposed to be a punishment for his slipping grades. At the job fair program word got around about his talents and one of the employers approached him for an on-the-spot audition. Having nothing prepared he did a freestyle rap and a free poem. The quality and the spontaneity of the audition lead the employers to hire him on the spot while others awaited confirmation.
From there he began to work with members of the world-renowned jazz group “Liquid Crystal Project”. Brandon “B Jazz” Scott, Eddie Bayard, and Rob Riley were among the firsts to recognize Chilla’s potential as an artist even going so far as to ask him to be apart of a Chase Bank musical sponsorship program. When the program came to an end with a performance on the Lincoln Theater’s main stage, Chilla went on to Ohio Dominican University to pursue a degree in Graphic Design. The first day he arrived Chilla was asked to freestyle over the campus radio and ended up getting a job as the campus DJ. While at ODU, he released his first official project “The Koldest” entirely engineered by himself in a dorm room in 2011.
His second project, “subZro” was created 3 years later in 2014 in the same fashion and quickly became a campus favorite after he single-handedly emailed every student in the school. After “subZro”, Chilla left ODU for a bigger platform and began to attend The Ohio State University. While attending OSU he joined up with the OSU Freestyle & Beatbox Club and started performing all over the city. The venues ranged from a 2000+ person Buckeyethon Event to the smaller stages of Scarlet and Grey and Saloon. He has also participated in multiple Battle of the Bands events as a solo performer and has been requested to perform again in 2016, on top of a brief tour with rapper KStylis.
In between his numerous shows he has been working on his third project for the past 3 years deemed “dFrost”. Chilla promises that it will be the most exciting and complex project that he’s released yet.
